What power supply will my computer take?

My old 400W power supply died so I replaced it with a brand new 450W one. The thing is now im hearing a crackling sound and the computer freezes. Should any power supply work or do motherboards have a limit as to how powerful the power supply can be ? The connections to the motherboard seem fine.
