Could anybody tell me what is the difference between a conqueror and a colonist?

well,actually i am working on the ysis of Joseph conrad's Heart Of Darkness,when Marlow,the protagonist,referred to the Romans as a conquerors and non colonists..................;so why do think he refered to them as conquerors???
