Why are so many people doing this?

Because people have come to believe that they need to "Be different". Thing is, "being different" does NOT mean "being yourself". It's being different VS trying to be different. When you try to be different, as these people you mention are, you're simply no different than the Abercrombie, Holliser, and American Eagle clones.
